Running out of seats at an event is not usually a good thing, but the CMSI staff were delighted to have this problem at their Shine event on Saturday 18th April, at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in Dublin. With over 60 members, supporters, children, staff and Trustees present, the room was packed full of people keen to worship, to listen and to share stories and highlights from the last year and look to the year ahead. It was like a family reunion, full of noise and buzz, as people caught up with each other, having travelled from as far as Coleraine and Cork.

The Annual Review in the morning began with a warm welcome from Jenny Smyth, the recently appointed Mission Director. Philip McKinley, currently serving on the board, led lively worship songs including an original Swahili song he wrote on a recent visit to South Sudan.

Staff shared some of their experiences of Global Partner visits, led prayers for the work of the Society and challenged the membership present to be ‘little lights’ for God in their everyday lives. We also heard from a couple of folk who had been involved in recent META visits to South Sudan and Nepal.

The morning finished with the launch ‘Changing People’ – a biographical index of Ireland’s CMS missionaries over the past 200 years, which was originally commissioned by Canon Cecil Wilson and has been compiled by Andrew Whiteside. Cecil and Andrew both shared something of the significance of the work, which will continue to be augmented and updated over the coming months.

After sharing a lunch full of good food and plentiful conversation, the Society’s AGM took place, the last meeting to be led by Bishop Alan Abernethy in his role as Chair of the Board of Trustees. With Alan’s three-year term coming to an end, Rev Adrian Dorrian was elected as the new Chair of the Board.

An election also took place for the nine positions available on the Board of Trustees, with a mixture of new and former Trustees being appointed to join those who were continuing their service on the Board. The Board now comprises: Rev Adrian Dorrian (Chair); Mr Trevor Buchanan; Rev Caroline Casserly-Farrar; Dr Elaine Elborn; Mr Shane Fitzpatrick; Rev Canon Brian Harper; Mr Norman Jackson; Mr Niall Manogue; Rev Dr Patrick McGlinchey; Mr Philip McKinley; Mr David Reynolds; Dr David Shepherd; Mr Robbie Syme.

The day ended with the Commissioning of Jenny Smyth in her role as CMSI’s Mission Director and the ‘re-commissioning’ of the Board of Trustees, the CMSI staff members and all those present. It was a very powerful message that each and every part of CMS Ireland has a role in sharing God’s love and light to those around us and those further away.

It was a great inspiration to have so many of our members and supporters join us for such a special and memorable day. We’ll be sure to get more chairs ready for the 2016 Shine event!
