According to a recent article in The Guardian, only 69 out of 277 refugee organisations remain able to work within Ugandan refugee camps. The Ugandan government found that many of these Non-Governmental agencies were operating without valid authority. The regulations are there to protect vulnerable refugee populations. However, having suspended so many agencies at once has left a gap in humanitarian services within the camps.
Our partners in Kajo-Keji Diocese, South Sudan are already seeing the impact of this gap in provision. Bishop Emmanuel tells us that there has been an influx of people coming back home, and of course the diocese is struggling to help them with their needs for shelter and food.
Food insecurity is a topic being highlighted by the UN right now; David Beasley (Executive Director, United Nations World Food Programme) includes South Sudan and DRC in his round up of most at risk nations.
Aljazeera reported Beasley’s call for a global response:
"It's time for those who have the most to step up, to help those who have the least in this extraordinary time in world history,"
His words seem to echo 1 John 3:17 (NLT):
“If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?”
